Lady Moon

Description

Lady Moon

100 years ago, Trumpeter swans were wiped out of Michigan, due to over hunting. In fact, there were only 69 trumpeters left in all of the US. The Kellogg Bird Sanctuary at the Michigan State University, brought a few Trumpeter swan eggs from Alaska in the 1980’s in an attempt to restart the population in Michigan.  There are now more than 3000 Trumpeter Swans in Michigan thanks to this effort, however, the population is still listed as threatened.

If you’re wondering if the swan you see is a Trumpeter or not, look at the bill.  Trumpeters have a solid black bill, while the mute swan has an orange bill.  They’ll migrate only as far south as open water and a large population has inhabited the Au Sable River in Michigan.
