Description
Midsummer Skies
Midsummer Skies was designed and built for my Qajaq club and family, Qajaq TC. This very special design and pattern is exclusive to them, as they have given me so much joy and camaraderie in my life.
The pattern itself is the Greenland flag in its true colours, with two orcas encircling the midsummer sun. The sky is still alight with stars as the sun rises.
The Greenland flag was designed by Thue Christiansen and adopted on June 21, 1985. The red and white colours symbolize hundreds of years as part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The circle in the middle represents the sun setting on the horizon and the light and warmth that return at midsummer. The fact that the Greenland flag does not feature a cross shows clearly that the country has a degree of political freedom as well as a close affinity with the other Inuit peoples around the pole.
