In the UK, and many other countries, Octopus are now considered sentient creatures.  This means they can feel pain, pleasure, hunger, thirst, warmth, joy, comfort and excitement.  They may even be able to dream.

What this means, is that octopus can no longer be held in labs and experimented on.  While recognizing octopus as sentient is a positive step towards our relationship with our wider world, (a step that should be taken globally), only time will tell if this will help these amazing escape artists avoid the table.
